The wireless industry is in the midst of a major transition from Macro to Small Cell and Wi-Fi architectures to address the surging data growth and demand for additional capacity. As a result, small cell architectures are being viewed by leading service providers as the solution for the coverage and capacity conundrums. In this approach, cells are pushed closer and closer to the end user and Wi-Fi is utilized as a key offload mechanism for getting cellular traffic off the 4G network.

Despite the obvious list of benefits, however, deploying networks that utilize small cell technologies are far different from the macro networks that preceded them. While many service providers are viewing the arrival of small cell as "just another new technology," deploying these networks requires expertise and skills that many traditional services organizations/firms lack. As such, savvy network operators are carefully selecting deployment partners capable of understanding the deployment dynamics (and navigating the potential pitfalls) that will allow these nascent architectures to ensure they deliver on their potential and promise.
