By nearly any measure, the app economy has exploded over the past few years and will continue to see strong growth. But apps themselves have exploded beyond the smartphone revolution that launched them. The handheld and even tablet versions of office suites and video games may today still fall far short of their PC or console cousins.
However, what they may lack in surface complexity, apps are making up for below the surface. They are living across devices and platforms, and tied into a web of companion cloud services that are getting progressively better and mining, storing and syncing your personal history and relationships. The digital marketer's dream was once one of migrating from right time, right place to one-to-one marketing. We're now moving far beyond that to take into account the right task and the right frame of mind driven by contextual information such as where someone is and what she wants to get done.
For the foreseeable future, the smartphone will be at the heart of the app economy -- always with us, getting smarter, and extending its reach into other mainstay products in our lives such as TVs and cars. But those products are on their own app journey as well.

Connected televisions will come to know what kind of entertainment we like, cars where we need to go, and eyewear and other wearables that will be able not only to record the events in your life but gauge how they affect your emotions and even your health.
