Description

This is the 28th lecture in the FOA series of lectures on fiber optics. Reference material is found on the FOA Guide website.
As networks get faster and use more wavelength division multiplexing, long distance links may require testing for the special needs of these systems. It is especially important for upgrades on older fibers that may never have been intended for 10G, 40G or even 100G systems operating with dozens of wavelengths. Three factors are considered most important -- spectral attenuation which confirms the fiber attenuation coefficient is appropriate over the wavelengths used by WDM systems, chromatic and polarization mode dispersion which may affect the transmission of high speed systems. This presentation will cover these topics.
