Description

For this week’s Carrier Wrap, we finish up our coverage of the Competitive Carriers Association’s recent Mobile Carriers Show in Nashville, where I moderated a panel discussion looking at “5G” policy challenges. The discussion looked at several topics seen as challenges to the continued development and eventual deployment of so-called 5G technologies, with a significant emphasis on policy moves.

Joining me in the discussion were Michael Amend, senior director for corporate development at T-Mobile US; Jessica Gyllstrom, an attorney at Washington, D.C.-based law firm Telecommunications Law Professionals; Brian Hendricks, head of policy and government relations for North America and Latin America at Nokia; John Kuzin, senior director and regulatory counsel at Qualcomm; and Johanna Thomas, wireless advisor to Jessica Rosenworcel, commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission.

Topics included insight into what panel members expected from still to be defined 5G standards; what they expect network planning to look like for the roll out of 5G services; how the FCC should look at spectrum allocation for 5G seeing as the government agency has never tied specific spectrum bands to any one technology; what spectrum bands are expected to be part of initial 5G deployments; and a look at different spectrum models using shared assets or tapping into unlicensed spectrum bands.

The video is a bit lengthy, but is definitely packed with some great insight.

Thanks for joining us on this week’s carrier wrap, and make sure to check us out again next week when we dive in carrier first quarter earnings.
